Abstract

The article discusses the rising demand for natural gas in the United States and the United Kingdom, driven primarily by the transition away from coal for power generation. In the U.S., gas consumption reached a record high of 89.4 billion cubic feet per day in 2023, with a notable increase in demand from the power sector. Conversely, while the U.K. experienced a peak in gas use for power generation, its overall annual consumption has been declining due to the expansion of renewable energy sources. The article also highlights the volatility of gas demand in Europe, particularly during periods of low renewable output, and outlines future goals for reducing reliance on gas as countries aim for net-zero emissions by 2030.
