Abstract

This article focuses on identifying and quantifying the essential physical tasks and minimum performance standards required for offshore wind technicians (WTs) to safely and effectively perform their duties. Using a multi-modal observational approach involving interviews, focus groups, surveys, and objective measurements across ten wind farm organizations in five countries, the study categorizes WT tasks into essential infrequent (casualty evacuation and prolonged ladder climbing) and essential frequent (short ladder climbs, manual handling, and working in restricted spaces). The findings establish detailed task descriptions and recommend minimum physical employment standards (PES) to support the development of globally applicable physical capacity assessments for offshore WTs, aiming to ensure fitness levels sufficient for the job's demands regardless of turbine make or model. The study also distinguishes PES from medical standards, emphasizing that PES should be task-related and independent of age or sex.
