Abstract

The Tarbela Dam in Pakistan is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Since its completion in 1974, the dam has played a crucial role in Pakistan's agriculture, flood control, and clean energy generation. It has released 406 million acre-feet of water for irrigation and generated over 590 billion units of eco-friendly electricity for the grid. Despite some challenges, such as sedimentation reducing water storage, Tarbela continues to be an important part of Pakistan's water management and power infrastructure. With ongoing expansions, the dam's installed power capacity is set to increase from 4,888 MW to 6,418 MW. [Extracted from the article]
