Abstract

The article discusses the arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. After the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, scientists predicted that other countries would develop atomic bombs, leading to an arms race. The Soviet Union, in particular, began developing its own atomic weapon and eventually tested its first atomic bomb in 1949. The United States responded by developing a more powerful weapon, the hydrogen bomb. Both countries continued to develop and test nuclear weapons throughout the Cold War, with the Soviet Union detonating the largest bomb in history in 1961. The article also mentions the development of smaller nuclear weapons and their testing in places like the Nevada Test Site. [Extracted from the article]
