Abstract

The US has warned Israel about the potential for a power vacuum in Gaza and has urged Israeli leaders to focus on post-war planning for the Palestinian territory. Israeli forces are currently battling in areas of northern Gaza that were previously cleared of Hamas fighters, highlighting the group's ability to reassemble. Israel lacks the manpower to hold and administer large parts of Gaza, and former US General David Petraeus emphasized the importance of clearing and holding territory to prevent the enemy from reconstituting. The US and other countries have tried to convince Israel not to attack the city of Rafah, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes it is necessary to defeat the remaining Hamas fighters.
