Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 on the global natural gas market, with particular emphasis on Europe. It details how the conflict disrupted energy supplies, causing sharp increases in gas prices, a reconfiguration of global LNG (liquefied natural gas) trade flows, and a shift in European energy policies toward supply diversification, demand reduction, and increased storage capacity. The study reviews the structure of the natural gas market, changes in LNG production and trade, European gas consumption and storage trends, and the policy responses including the EU's REPowerEU plan and fiscal relief measures. It concludes by highlighting ongoing market uncertainties and the importance of investing in energy security and the clean energy transition to mitigate future risks.
