Abstract

This article focuses on a qualitative study examining the challenges faced by school counsellors in Istanbul, Turkiye, following the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. Conducted by researchers at Yeditepe University, the study identified four main themes of challenges—system-level, organisational, professional, and personal—affecting counsellors’ ability to provide post-disaster psychosocial support to children. Key issues included insufficient counsellor numbers, limited collaboration and administrative support, lack of disaster-specific training, and significant psychological strain on counsellors who were also disaster survivors. The research emphasizes the need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and ongoing institutional and psychological support for school counsellors, alongside enhanced training programs.
