Abstract
The article examines why employees often accept lower pay at mission-oriented companies that emphasize social impact framing, a trend where organizations highlight their positive contributions to society. Through five experimental studies, the research found that job candidates exposed to social impact messaging are significantly less likely to negotiate for higher salaries, fearing such requests would be perceived as greedy and violate organizational norms valuing intrinsic motivation. This effect is linked to a managerial bias that views interest in monetary rewards as undermining genuine commitment to the mission. The authors suggest that job candidates develop negotiation skills and that organizations train managers to recognize and counteract these biases to ensure fair compensation practices without undermining authentic social impact goals.
