Abstract

Researchers from Instituto de Salud Carlos III conducted a study on kleptomania, focusing on the impulsive-compulsive spectrum and treatment outcomes for women. The study included 150 female participants diagnosed with kleptomania only, kleptomania with co-occurring eating disorders, or healthy controls. Results showed that both kleptomania groups exhibited more psychopathology, impulsivity, and dysfunctional personality features compared to healthy controls, with poor treatment outcomes observed in both clinical groups. The research suggests that kleptomania can have impulsive and compulsive features, impacting treatment outcomes, and that co-occurring kleptomania and eating disorders may require specific interventions.
