Abstract

This article critically examines Stein Ringen's book *How Democracies Live: Power, Statecraft, and Freedom in Modern Societies*, which proposes an unconventional approach to understanding democratic backsliding by starting with five abstract core concepts of political theory—power, statecraft, freedom, poverty, and democracy—rather than specific case studies. Ringen argues that a conceptual "anatomy" of politics is necessary before addressing democratic decline, but the article raises doubts about the coherence and practical applicability of his taxonomy, noting gaps such as the absence of political equality in his definition of democracy and limited engagement with contemporary empirical research. While acknowledging Ringen's broad insights and ambitious scope, the article questions whether his ideal-theoretical framework effectively bridges to concrete strategies for democratic revival, suggesting that the conventional method of starting with particular cases remains more fruitful for understanding and addressing democratic challenges.
