Abstract
This article systematically reviews the application of virtual reality (VR) technology as an intervention tool for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) under 18 years old. Analyzing 39 studies from 2006 to early 2024, it finds VR interventions effective in improving social skills, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and attention among children with ASD, though most studies exhibit methodological weaknesses, gender imbalances favoring males, and focus primarily on higher-functioning individuals. The review highlights the increasing use of group interventions, human facilitators, and immersive VR technologies, while noting limited evidence on the long-term maintenance and generalization of skills acquired through VR. It recommends future research to enhance study rigor, include more diverse participant profiles (especially females and lower-functioning children), ground VR activities in theoretical frameworks, and assess sustained real-world impacts.
