Abstract

The article discusses a study conducted in Nijmegen, Netherlands, focusing on memory disorders, specifically amnesia, in intensive care unit (ICU) patients and its relationship with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The research involved 426 adult patients who were interviewed three months post-ICU using the ICU-Memory Tool and assessed for PTSD symptoms at three and twelve months. Findings revealed that 47.7% of patients had factual memories, while 38.5% experienced delusional memories, with a significant increase in PTSD symptoms over time, particularly among those with delusional memories. The study suggests that targeted interventions to address memory disturbances could help reduce the psychological impact of critical illness. [Extracted from the article]
