Abstract

The article examines the intense anger some drivers exhibit towards cyclists on British roads, exploring the psychological and environmental factors that contribute to these confrontations. It highlights that while most drivers are not hostile, a minority display aggressive behavior, often fueled by social identity dynamics, cognitive dissonance, and moral licensing. The author notes that the UK’s road culture, characterized by narrow and congested streets, exacerbates tensions, leading to misunderstandings and hostility between cyclists and drivers. Suggestions for reducing cyclist-directed rage include improving cycling infrastructure, promoting predictability in behavior, and fostering empathy through role reversal. Extracted from the article
