Abstract

"Sensing Spirits: Paranormal Investigation and the Social Construction of Ghosts" by Marc A. Eaton is an ethnographic study that explores how people construct and make sense of encounters with spirits. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of contemporary ghost subcultures, drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews with paranormal investigation teams. Eaton's approach is methodologically agnostic, neither validating nor debunking his informants' claims, and he treats his informants with respect and dignity. The book examines topics such as the negotiation of narratives, the interplay between science and religion, and the collective processes of narrative development. Overall, "Sensing Spirits" offers valuable insights into the social dynamics and cultural significance of paranormal experiences. [Extracted from the article]
