Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University explores the relationship between depression, specifically Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and infectious diseases. Using a method called Mendelian Randomization (MR), the researchers analyzed genetic variants associated with MDD and infectious diseases to determine any causal connections. The findings suggest that individuals with genetically predicted MDD have an increased risk of candidiasis, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), and urinary tract infections (UTI). The study also identified bidirectional causal relationships between UTI and MDD. These results provide evidence of a causal connection between MDD and susceptibility to infectious diseases, particularly URTI and UTI. [Extracted from the article]
