Abstract

The article focuses on research examining boredom and psychological distress, referred to as "le cafard," among soldiers in the French and Spanish Foreign Legions from the early European conquest of Morocco until the late 1930s. It utilizes memoirs, military reports, and contemporary literature to analyze how coping mechanisms such as alcohol, gambling, and sexual relationships influenced morale and military cohesion, while also addressing gender dynamics, including regulated prostitution and informal unions. The research concludes that boredom significantly impacted the cohesion, culture, discipline, and practices of violence within the Foreign Legions. [Extracted from the article]
