Abstract

This article explores the experience of transnational caregiving and grief during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the challenges faced by migrants providing care to older adults across international borders. It highlights how pandemic-related travel restrictions and health protocols disrupted traditional caregiving roles, limited physical presence at the time of death, and altered mourning rituals, leading to themes of sudden death, isolation, guilt, loss of traditions, and lack of closure. Using an autobiographical qualitative case study, the research illustrates how these factors complicated grief processes, particularly disenfranchised and ambiguous grief, for distant caregivers. The study underscores the cultural and emotional complexities of transnational caregiving amid global crises and calls for further research on caregiving and bereavement in transnational contexts.
