Abstract

The article focuses on the relationship between employee happiness and business performance, presenting evidence that higher employee well-being significantly boosts productivity and profitability. Research by the investment firm Irrational Capital found that S&P 500 companies ranking in the top 20% for employee satisfaction outperformed those in the bottom 20% in stock price by nearly 6 percentage points, surpassing gains linked to extrinsic rewards like pay. Six key factors driving employee satisfaction include innovation, direct management, organizational effectiveness, engagement, emotional connection, and organizational alignment. The article offers three practical exercises for managers to enhance these factors: seeking employee advice on problems, having honest and clear conversations, and fostering peer friendships through team lunches without managerial presence.
