Abstract

This article explores the hopes and concerns of undergraduate psychology students aspiring to become clinical psychologists (CP) in the UK, highlighting challenges related to limited, inconsistent, or unclear career information and the highly competitive nature of doctoral training programs. Through semi-structured interviews with thirteen students, three main themes emerged: the need for timely and credible career information, the perceived difficulties and inequalities in accessing clinical psychology training, and the personal and practical costs of pursuing this career path. While some students were aware of alternative mental health careers, these were often viewed as lower status or fallback options. To address these issues, the authors established a university Clinical Psychology Club to provide students with better access to information, mentorship, and networking opportunities with practicing clinical psychologists.
