Abstract
South Africa recently held a voter registration drive in an effort to combat widespread apathy leading up to the 2024 national elections. Voter turnout has been declining in recent years, with only 49% of eligible voters participating in the 2019 elections. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has faced allegations of corruption and mismanagement, causing its popularity to decline. The Electoral Commission of South Africa reported that 26,000 voters registered on the first day of the drive. Additionally, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed advocate Kholeka Gcaleka as the new public protector following the impeachment of the previous public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
