Abstract
The Fight for History: 75 Years of Forgetting, Remembering, and Remaking Canada's Second World War examines the evolving memory and meaning of Canada's role in World War II. Using the concept of social memory, the book traces how Canadian veterans returned to a society eager to move on, resulting in ephemeral "living memorials" and limited public or academic focus on the war for decades. It highlights shifts in remembrance, including the impact of anti-war sentiment and the eventual resurgence of veteran-led efforts to reframe Canada's wartime contributions, particularly after the 1994 D-Day anniversary. Drawing on diverse sources, the work offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges in preserving Canada's World War II legacy and serves as a foundational text for further research on the topic.
