Abstract
This article examines how race is defined and discussed in developmental psychology textbooks, focusing on its relation to intelligence. An analysis of 30 textbooks published between 1990 and 2019 found that none explicitly defined race, leaving its conceptualization unclear. Among the 37% of texts addressing racial differences in intelligence, all attributed these differences to social factors without invoking biological explanations. Compared to introductory psychology texts, developmental psychology textbooks more accurately framed intelligence differences as socially determined but were more silent on defining race, highlighting a broader hesitancy within psychology to engage with the concept.
