Abstract

This article focuses on the limited impact of Australia's National Suicide Prevention Trial (NSPT) on reducing suicide and self-harm rates, highlighting the need to address broader social determinants beyond clinical interventions. Despite multiple suicide prevention efforts, suicide rates have remained stable overall but increased significantly in the lowest socioeconomic status (SES) groups between 2010 and 2021. The authors argue that enhancing welfare support and minimum wage for low SES populations could improve social integration—both at personal and societal levels—and thereby reduce suicide rates in these vulnerable groups. They emphasize the importance of combining welfare improvements with active labor market policies and call for further research to evaluate the effects of welfare policies on suicide rates regionally and comparatively across countries.
