Abstract

This article provides an overview of Clinical Associates in Psychology (CAPs), a psychological profession in England designed to address workforce shortages and improve mental health service delivery. CAPs undergo an 18-month MSc-level apprenticeship, training to deliver evidence-based psychological assessments and interventions within specific populations under supervision, thereby complementing existing psychological teams. Through multiple case studies across NHS trusts, CAPs have demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing waiting times, enhancing team efficiency, filling service gaps, leading community outreach, and driving quality improvement projects. The role is noted for its cost-effectiveness, contribution to service development, and potential to increase access to psychological care, particularly for underserved populations. The article concludes that CAPs represent a promising addition to the mental health workforce, aligning with NHS goals for expanding evidence-based psychological services.
