Abstract

This article examines the prevalence of firearm and other projectile weapon depictions in top-selling Japanese manga, particularly Shōnen manga targeted at males aged 8 to 18, which have a large youth readership in the United States. Analyzing 500 chapters from ten popular series, the study found that 25.8% contained at least one depiction of firearms, with 684 instances of characters handling or discussing such weapons; most characters involved were adult males portrayed as "good" protagonists. The findings highlight frequent exposure of adolescent and preteen readers to firearm-related content, with minimal anti-weapon messaging present. The authors recommend that manga publishers and distributors collaboratively develop a comprehensive, detailed rating system—modeled on systems like the Motion Picture Association's—to better inform parents and guardians and help monitor youth exposure to potentially harmful content.
