Abstract

This article examines the influence of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century occultism on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theories and their subsequent impact on parapsychology and transpersonal psychology. It highlights Freud's ambiguous stance toward the occult, noting his interest in phenomena such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and dream interpretation, as well as his engagement with the Society for Psychical Research. The paper also discusses Freud's concept of the uncanny and his recognition of the "magical" power of words in therapy. Additionally, it explores how Freud's followers, notably Carl Jung and Roberto Assagioli, expanded on his ideas by integrating spiritual and esoteric elements, thereby shaping the development of transpersonal psychology and parapsychology.
