Abstract

This article examines how ambiguous grief related to terminal illness is mediated through digital platforms, focusing on Adam Hayden's blog, Glioblastology, and his social media engagement. Drawing on the psychology concept of ambiguous loss—losses that are unclear, ongoing, and lack definitive rituals—the study explores how Hayden, diagnosed with glioblastoma, uses digital media to create community, cope with uncertainty, and produce new meanings around illness and disability. Hayden's digital presence exemplifies how terminally ill individuals tactically employ online spaces for ritualized coping, advocacy, and redefinition of identity amid persistent grief. The research highlights the interplay between embodied experience and mediated communication, emphasizing digital media's role in fostering agency, connection, and cultural critique for those navigating life with terminal illness.
