Abstract
This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the clinical utility of recall versus recognition memory testing in identifying anterograde memory impairment across various diagnostic groups. Analyzing 63 studies published since 2010, the findings indicate that patients with memory disorders perform significantly worse than controls on both recall and recognition tests, but recall tests show a greater impairment effect size. This pattern holds across different test materials, patient ages, education levels, and diagnostic categories, except for temporal lobe epilepsy, where sample size was limited. The study concludes that recall testing is generally more effective than recognition testing for detecting anterograde memory impairment, with no diagnostic group showing a clear advantage for recognition tests.
