Abstract
This article examines communication studies as a dynamic and multifaceted academic discipline characterized by definitional ambiguity, institutional diversity, and ongoing debates about its disciplinary status. It highlights how communication education adapts to varied global contexts and institutional pressures, reflecting its role as a "chameleon" discipline that intersects with humanities, social sciences, business, and technology. The article discusses challenges arising from the field's pluralistic approaches, precarious academic positions, and the tension between vocational training and broader communication competencies. It also introduces case studies illustrating how communication educators worldwide respond resourcefully to these challenges by integrating cultural, cognitive, and professional dimensions into curricula. Overall, the article situates communication studies within evolving educational, political, and global frameworks, emphasizing the need for adaptability and interdisciplinary collaboration.
