Abstract

This article systematically reviews the impact of prior exposure to outdoor air pollution on cognitive ability during adolescence. Analyzing 12 studies published between 2014 and 2024 that assessed cognition in individuals aged 12 to 18, the review found that eight studies reported a negative association between higher air pollution levels and cognitive outcomes, while four found no significant link. The findings suggest a potential relationship between outdoor air pollution and adolescent cognitive function, highlighting a gap in research focused specifically on this developmental period compared to studies on infants and older adults. Further investigation is recommended to better understand the effects of air pollution on the developing adolescent brain.
