Abstract
The article focuses on the impact of excessive gaming on military personnel, highlighting a case of a U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant who engaged in a 72-hour gaming binge leading to severe sleep deprivation, self-inflicted injuries, and fabricated assault claims to avoid disciplinary action. Excessive gaming, particularly binge-gaming, is associated with impaired sleep, self-harm, and decreased job performance, posing risks to individual readiness and military discipline. The World Health Organization defines gaming disorder as a pattern of impaired control over gaming that prioritizes it over other activities despite negative consequences. The article emphasizes the need for military healthcare providers and leadership to recognize excessive gaming as a potential factor in sleep disturbances, self-injurious behavior, and disciplinary issues to safeguard force readiness.
