Abstract
The article focuses on the impact of destructive criticism in the workplace and how leaders can provide constructive feedback without causing harm. Research involving 402 full-time U.S. employees reveals that destructive criticism—characterized by judgment without guidance, unfairness, dismissiveness, character attacks, and public shaming—often leads to lasting emotional damage, reduced performance, and increased turnover. Such criticism commonly comes from direct supervisors but can originate from various organizational roles, reflecting broader issues in power dynamics and workplace culture. The authors recommend five key practices for leaders: setting clear boundaries for feedback, using a structured approach focused on behavior and improvement, pausing before delivering feedback, promptly repairing harm when it occurs, and actively guarding against bias disguised as criticism.
