Abstract

The article discusses the Pentagon's inspector general's review of US military personnel in Japan regarding compliance with policies aimed at preventing and addressing violent crimes, particularly sexual assaults. The review will focus on the performance, training, and criminal history of service members involved in violent crimes against Japanese nationals, following recent protests from the Japanese government over alleged assaults by American service members. The evaluation will take place at various military bases in Japan, and comes in response to specific incidents, including a Marine's conviction for sexual assault. In July 2024, US Forces in Japan announced new measures to prevent such crimes, including joint patrols with local police and enhanced sobriety checkpoints. [Extracted from the article]
