Abstract
This article focuses on a biopsychosocial (BPS) approach to assessing the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It highlights the importance of understanding the complex interaction between biological, psychological, and social factors, including diagnoses, environmental influences, and key adult relationships, in shaping a child's mental health. The article outlines practical assessment methods that incorporate the child's voice, observations, and input from adults across settings, emphasizing flexibility and sensitivity to individual needs. This holistic model aims to support educational staff and psychologists in developing tailored interventions that promote wellbeing and coping skills for children with SEND.
