Abstract

This article investigates how the personality trait Need for Cognition (NFC) influences memory performance, particularly in story learning. In a study of 174 undergraduate students, NFC moderated the relationship between immediate story recall (Logical Memory I) and overall intelligence (Full Scale IQ), suggesting that individuals with higher NFC encode story information more effectively during initial learning. However, NFC did not moderate delayed story recall (Logical Memory II) or other memory tasks such as Faces, Family Pictures, or Verbal Paired Associates from the Wechsler Memory Scale-III. The findings imply that NFC may enhance memory performance primarily through increased engagement or motivation during learning rather than affecting all memory domains.
