Abstract
This article focuses on the development and implementation of adapted colour coded behaviour monitoring charts to support Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) principles in managing behaviours that challenge (BtC) in dementia care within two UK services. It outlines how the Hull and Rotherham clinical psychology teams introduced and refined these charts—using colour categories aligned with emotional arousal levels—to improve behavioural data collection, staff engagement, and multidisciplinary team analysis in inpatient and community settings. The paper discusses practical challenges such as staff training, chart completion responsibility, data processing, and the need for ongoing supervision to maintain data quality. Overall, the use of colour coded charts is presented as a promising tool to enhance understanding and management of BtC in dementia, while acknowledging implementation complexities and the importance of tailoring approaches to local contexts.
