Abstract

This article evaluates the validity of the Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (B-WISDM) among French university student smokers, including both daily and non-daily users. The study confirms the B-WISDM's structure as comprising 11 first-order motivational factors and demonstrates measurement invariance across smoker types and gender, supporting its applicability to occasional smokers. It also establishes concurrent validity with tobacco dependence and convergent validity with psychological variables such as smoker identity, perceived behavioral control, social norms, attitudes, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. These findings suggest the B-WISDM is a reliable tool for assessing diverse smoking motivations in university students and may inform targeted prevention and cessation interventions.
