Abstract
A report from the University of Trento in Italy examines the relevance of sociality in the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The researchers identified sociality-laden criteria in various categories of mental disorders, such as affiliation and attachment, social communication, perception and understanding of others, culture, clinical significance, and no specific construct. The study found that 13% of mental disorders mention affiliation and attachment, 8.8% mention social communication and perception and understanding of others, 15% mention culture, and 40% mention non-specific sociality. The researchers suggest that a theory-laden approach to sociality, informed by evolutionary insights, could be beneficial in the long run. [Extracted from the article]
