Abstract
Trump's position that Canada become his 51st state as well as his tariff threats have galvanized Canadians in ways not seen since World War II. This sudden rise in Canadian nationalism can be seen in popular culture, the recent federal election, the dramatic reduction in cross border travel and the emphasis on buying Canadian goods. Using systems psychodynamic frameworks, the paper examines how Canada's defensive response to anxiety mirrors the nationalism of the United States, reflects its history as a colony of the British Empire and continues to ignore its responsibilities to its Indigenous peoples.
