Abstract
The article investigates how the amount of self-control consumers exert to choose a goal-consistent action influences their perceptions of goal progress. Across eight studies involving over 7,500 participants, it was found that consumers perceive greater progress toward their goals when more self-control is required to complete an identical goal-consistent task, such as going to the gym despite tempting alternatives. This effect occurs because exerting higher self-control signals greater commitment to the goal, which in turn makes future goal pursuit feel easier, thereby enhancing perceived progress. The research demonstrates this phenomenon across various contexts—including fitness, to-do lists, and financial goals—and shows that companies can leverage these insights by reminding consumers of their self-control efforts to boost motivation and improve perceptions of goal-related services.
