Abstract

This article investigates the mediating roles of psychological distress and hopelessness in the relationship between alcohol use disorder (AUD) and suicidal ideation among young adults aged 18 to 25, using data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). The study found that AUD, psychological distress, and hopelessness are significant risk factors for suicidal ideation, with both psychological distress and hopelessness serving as important mediators linking AUD to suicidal thoughts for men and women alike. No significant sex differences were observed in these mediation pathways. The findings emphasize the need for interventions targeting co-occurring AUD and psychological distress/hopelessness to reduce suicide risk in young adults.
