Abstract

The article focuses on Andrey Gugnin’s selection of five musical recordings that hold special significance from his childhood, illustrating his evolving appreciation for diverse musical styles. These include the 1970s alternative rock album *The Power and the Glory* by Gentle Giant, which introduced him to complex, folk-influenced music beyond classical genres; Dmitri Shostakovich’s *Symphony No. 7*, which he acquired during a trip to the Netherlands and found emotionally immersive; and a recording by Riccardo Muti featuring Mussorgsky’s *Pictures at an Exhibition* and Stravinsky’s *The Rite of Spring*, admired for its virtuosity. Gugnin also reflects on Glenn Gould’s interpretations of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 24 and 29, highlighting their unique structure and emotional depth, and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli’s performance of Galuppi’s Sonata No. 5 in C major, valued for its clarity and perfection. These recordings collectively represent pivotal moments in Gugnin’s musical development and personal connection to music.
