Abstract

The article focuses on research conducted by the Christian Research Association (CRA) in partnership with the University of Divinity, examining the sources of meaning in life among retirees in Australia. It highlights that social connections—such as involvement in small groups, hobbies, volunteer work, and family—play a crucial role in providing retirees with a sense of purpose, contribution, and belonging, which in turn supports mental and physical health. The research emphasizes that meaning arises when individuals feel valued and can contribute to others, contrasting this with entertainment or passive activities that offer diversion but little lasting meaning. The findings also suggest that churches may enhance meaning for older adults by fostering inclusive small groups where personal contributions are acknowledged and valued.
