Abstract

The article focuses on research regarding cognitive and psychiatric issues in patients with serotonin-producing neuroendocrine tumors (NET). Conducted by the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the study assessed 81 patients and found an 11% prevalence of cognitive impairment and a 20% prevalence of psychiatric disorders. Notably, cognitive function was not linked to peripheral serotonin production, and depressive symptoms were associated with lower serum serotonin and higher tryptophan concentrations. The research concludes that cognitive and psychiatric problems in these patients occur infrequently and are not solely explained by tryptophan depletion due to tumor-related serotonin production.
