Disenfranchised Grief: The Death of a Student With Special Needs and the Coping of the School Staff – A Qualitative Study.

Abstract

This article focuses on the experiences and perceptions of educational staff in Israeli special education schools regarding coping with the death of a student with special needs. Through qualitative interviews with 15 staff members, the study found that schools serve as crucial support systems for students, staff, and families during bereavement, often adapting mourning rituals to the cognitive abilities of students. While some schools have informal protocols for managing student deaths, there is a widespread need for formalized procedures and ongoing training to better support both students and staff. The research highlights the importance of open communication about death, inclusion of children with special needs in mourning processes, and comprehensive support for educational staff coping with grief.
