Instructional Videos to Familiarize Young Autistic Adults With Grocery Tasks With a View to Vocational Integration: From Design to Practicability.

Abstract
This article focuses on the development, validation, and practicability testing of instructional videos designed to support vocational integration of young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in grocery store work environments. Using a sequential 'research-development' design and iterative content validation involving researchers, community organizations, mentors, and individuals with autism, the study produced 42 videos—21 for trainees with ASD and 21 for their mentors—covering tasks across seven grocery departments. The videos incorporate visual and auditory cues tailored to the needs of people with autism, accompanied by post-viewing questions to assess interest, discomfort, and comprehension, thereby facilitating individualized support and discussion about employment suitability. Results indicate that these videos are practical tools for familiarizing both trainees and mentors with grocery store tasks and ASD-related accommodations, with potential to enhance socio-professional integration. The study highlights the novelty of providing parallel instructional content for mentors and trainees and recommends further research to evaluate the videos' effectiveness in real workplace settings.
