Abstract

The article focuses on the South African launch of *The Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud*, a 24-volume set revised, supplemented, and edited by Professor Mark Solms. This edition updates and corrects the original mid-20th-century Standard Edition, addressing translation issues—particularly technical terminology—and incorporates six decades of new Freud scholarship, including previously unpublished works. South African scholars Wahbie Long and Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela contribute perspectives on Freud's relevance to contemporary social issues such as identity, trauma, and violence in the South African context, emphasizing psychoanalysis as a critical, interdisciplinary tool for understanding individual and collective histories. The conversation highlights the ongoing challenges of translation, interpretation, and the integration of neuroscience with psychoanalytic theory, underscoring the edition's significance for 21st-century psychoanalytic practice and scholarship globally.
