Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between depression and death anxiety in older adults aged 65 and above, focusing on the moderating role of ego-integrity—a psychological concept involving acceptance and meaning-making in life. Surveying 236 community-dwelling older adults in Korea, the study found that higher depression levels are associated with increased death anxiety, while greater ego-integrity, particularly satisfaction with current life and living wisely, moderates and reduces this effect. Subcomponents of ego-integrity such as attitude toward life and acceptance of old age did not show significant moderating effects. These findings highlight the potential of enhancing ego-integrity to inform psychological interventions aimed at reducing death anxiety and promoting well-being among older adults.
