Abstract
This article focuses on comparing performance on the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test–Revised (HVLT-R) between monolingual English-speaking and Spanish/English bilingual veterans. The study involved clinically referred veterans who completed the HVLT-R in English and found no significant differences between cognitively unimpaired monolingual and bilingual groups in measures of verbal memory, including total recall, delayed recall, retention, and recognition discrimination. Both groups demonstrated similar English verbal fluency, indicating high English proficiency among bilingual participants. The findings suggest that existing HVLT-R normative data are appropriate for assessing rote verbal memory in Spanish/English bilingual veterans with high English proficiency.
