Abstract

This article examines the experiences of organizational leaders disclosing chronic illnesses in the workplace, based on research involving 326 leaders and interviews with senior executives. It finds that disclosure is often a gradual process, with most leaders partially disclosing their condition, and that a majority do not regret sharing their illness, citing benefits such as increased support. However, many leaders still downplay their illness due to fears of being perceived as weak or incompetent, which can affect career advancement. The study highlights the importance of psychological safety and organizational support in encouraging transparency, while emphasizing that managing a chronic illness can coexist with effective leadership.
